Aboriginal Law Bulletin --- "New ALRC Customary Laws Commissioner" [1981] AboriginalLawB 36; (1981) 1(2) Aboriginal Law Bulletin 11

New ALRC Customary Laws Commissioner

Dr James Crawford, a senior lecturer in Law at the University of Adelaide has been appointed full-time Commissioner in charge of the ALRC customary laws reference. Dr Crawford will take up his appointment in January 1982, replacing Mr Bruce Debelle who has returned to legal practice in Adelaide after three years' service with the ALRC. Mr Debelle remains a part-time Commissioner and will continue to be involved in work on the reference.

The ALRC remains anxious to hear reaction to its Customary Laws Discussion Paper, published in November 1980. While it is likely that the Commission will hold further public hearings concerning the reference, the precise manner in which the Commission will proceed has not yet been determined. Options being considered include the publication of an Interim Report, followed by further consultation with interested parties. The Commission is open to suggestions concerning the most appropriate ways of proceeding. Views, suggestions and submissions may be forwarded to Mr Peter Hennessy, Senior Research Officer, ALRC, GPO Box 3708, Sydney 2001.

Given the work facing the Commission, it is unlikely that a final report willl be published before the end of 1982.
