Census Figures Queried

The National Aboriginal Conference has called for a Federal Government inquiry into suggested inaccuracies in 1981 census figures. The figures show decreases in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and the A.C.T. Overall the figures suggest the total number of Aborigines and T.S.I. fell from 160,915 in 1976 to 159,897 in 1981. In Victoria, the 1981 census recorded 6,057 Aborigines and T.S.I. compared with 14,760 in 1976 (a fall of 60 per cent). The NAC executive has told the Prime Minister and cabinet it considers something was `obviously very wrong' with the 1981 figures.

Blackbooks

Blackbooks is part of the Co-operative for Aborigines which is responsible for Tranby Aboriginal College. Established in 1982, Blackbooks provides a bookshop service, mail-order service and distribution network for books by and about Aboriginal people. Profits will be used to publish works, especially those by Aboriginal people.

As Aboriginal Studies becomes increasingly accepted in schools, colleges and universities, there is a need for recommendations concerning the various books available. Some currently available books about Aborigines perpetuate racist attitudes. Blackbooks will review new publications and make recommendations in a regular newsletter/sales sheet.
