New Course to Help Aboriginal People Preserve their Cultural Heritage

During National Aborigines Week, Senator Susan Ryan announced Australia's first tertiary-level course to train Aboriginal Australians in the preservation of their cultural materials would begin at Canberra College of Advanced Education in 1986.

The Commonwealth-funded course leading to the award of Associate Diploma in Applied Science will initially take up to 15 students.

The course has been established in the College's School of Applied Science following a request by the Museum of Australia. Students will be able to take a range of units from the College, the Australian National University and the Canberra School of Art, including a general museum studies program.

Senator Ryon said that 11 Aboriginal students from many parts of Australia were currently undertaking a special bridging course at the College prior to beginning the Associate Diploma next year. The College was also establishing an Aboriginal enclave, with an Aboriginal counsellor and tutor, to help its Aboriginal students.

'Up to $30,000 has been provided for 1985-1986 under the special course provision of the Aboriginal Study Assistance Scheme (Abstudy)for the Associate Diploma and bridging courses, and for the establishment of the enclave', Senator Ryan said. 'Students are also eligible for living allowances of up to $78.96 a week under Abstudy'.
