Aboriginal Law Bulletin --- "Police Detention for Drunkenness" [1988] AboriginalLawB 17; (1988) 1(31) Aboriginal Law Bulletin 2

Police Detention for Drunkenness

The rate of detention in police cells for intoxication is 30 times higher for Aboriginals than non-Aboriginal people in NSW. This is despite the passing of the Intoxicated Persons Act 1979 which was designed to keep drunk people out of cells. The findings are part of an unpublished paper by Chris Cunneen. The paper also cites those areas where the rate of detention is particularly appalling, most notably Brewarrina, Wilcannia and Walgett. Copies of the paper (and another entitled Aborigines and Criminal Justice: an Overview of the NSW situation) are available by writing to the author at 81 Francis Street, Leichardt 2040.
