CONFERENCE

2004 Constitutional Law Conference

A major conference on constitutional law, the third in a series, will be held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney on Friday, 20 February 2004. The event is organised with the sup­ port of the Australian Association of Constitutional Law. The 2003 event looking at the cases and developments of 2002 sold out. The papers can be found at <http://www.gtcentre.unsw.edu.au/publications> .

Apart from a review of the decisions of the High Court and other Australian courts over 2003, the conference will also feature sessions on 'Detention in the Constitution, National Security and Asylum Seekers' and on the approach of the High Court to public law in 'Judicial Activism and Judicial Restraint: Where Does the Balance Lie?'

Speakers include Justice Ronald Sackville (Federal Court), Justice Ruth McColl (NSW Supreme Court), John Basten QC and Bret Walker SC (of the NSW Bar) and Dr Mary Crock (Sydney University).

The conference dinner will be held at NSW Parliament House. The speaker will be the Chief Justice of the High Court, Murray Gleeson. By popular demand, there will again be a High Court trivia quiz.

The cost of the event is the same as the previous two years, with the conference $341 and the dinner $99 (total

PUBLICATIONS

Inmates Law Book

Commencing January 2004 inmates entering prisons in Darwin and Alice Springs will be given a copy of the - Inmates Law Book -a plain. English guide to the courts, sentencing, parole and the rules of 'being inside'.

The Inmates Law Book is an initiative of the NT Legal Aid Commission with funding from the Law Society Public Purposes Trust. It was written in consultation with prisoners and ex-prisoners in the Northern Territory.

Following its publication the book will be translated into Kriol and re­ corded on tape and CD to cater for the high number of Indigenous inmates. The audio will feature music played by prisoners.
