Preface
This book evolved out of a conference organized in May 2001 in Marseilles,
France, sponsored by the Institut d'Economie Publique under the auspices of
the European Association of Law and Economics. Scholars invited to give
papers were given carte blanche, but were asked to revise their contributions
after the conference discussions. We present here a selection of them. They
reflect the current research on the subject, unified by the same concern,
namely the understanding of competition in the market for law, in the perspec-
tive of the European legal integration. They also show a diversity of opinions
that we did not try to iron out.
We heartily thank Danièle Durieu and all the participants in the conference.
The publishing process has been both friendly and efficient. We are very grate-
ful for that.
