Enduring Value ­ The Australian Minerals
Industry Framework for Sustainable
Development, 2004

Commentary: To harness the global mining industry's commitment to sustainable
development within a strategic framework, in 2003 the International Council on Mining
and Metals (ICMM; www.icmm.com) adopted ten sustainable development principles
underpinned by 48 supporting elements. The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA;
www.minerals.org.au) represents the exploration, mining and minerals processing
sectors in Australia. Enduring Value, the MCA's Operational Framework for Sustainable
Development Implementation, assists companies implement the ICMM's Sustainable
Development Framework at site level while also providing a regional framework for
those companies not engaged in the ICMM process: MCA (2003), `Annual Report'.
Enduring Value builds upon the MCA's earlier Environmental Management Code (noted
below) and identifies several `pigeon-holes' for capturing and extending leading social,
environmental and economic management practices across industry. The Global
Reporting Initiative (GRI) 2002 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines as well as the Mining
and Metals Sector Supplement are the reporting tools for demonstrating compliance
with both the ICMM Framework and the Australian-led initiative.
Enduring Value is compulsory for MCA members and open to adoption by others. All
exploration, mining and minerals processing companies and contractors are eligible to
become signatories provided that they commit to implementation in writing. Obligations
include progressively implementing the ICMM Principles and Elements, annual public
reporting of site-level performance (reporting metrics are selected from either the GRI
or self-developed) and internal or external risk ...
