Ahmed Abdel Latif is Programme Manager of Intellectual Property and Sustainable
Development at ICTSD. He was a delegate from Egypt to the TRIPS Council of the
WTO and to the WIPO during 2000­2004, as well as acting as Coordinator of the
African Group at WIPO. Author of `Developing Country Coordination in International
Intellectual Property Standard-setting' (TRADE Working Paper 24, South Centre), he
is a graduate of the American University in Cairo, Sciences Po Paris and the London
School of Economics and Political Science.

Tenu Avafia (B.Juris, LLB, LLM) is a lawyer working with the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP) as an intellectual property specialist. His other areas of research
interest are international trade law, environmental law and human rights law. Previously, he
worked at the Trade Law Centre for Southern Africa as a researcher with a focus on intellec-
tual property, trade negotiations and regional integration issues. He was also a lawyer with
the AIDS Law Unit of the Legal Assistance Centre in Namibia, where he focused on rights-
based litigation and research. He has lectured on international economic and environmental
law at the University of Namibia and has published widely in his areas of research interest.

Jonathan Berger is a senior researcher and policy, research and communications manager
at the AIDS Law Project, South Africa. In addition, he represents the law and human
rights sector on the Programme Implementation Committee of the South African
