Abstract/Description:

This chapter is intended as an introduction to the intersection between energy law and food production in dry-land countries, a group of nations where 2.3 billion of the world's population live. It discusses the concepts of food and water security, in particular the interrelationship between renewable energy and national food security objectives, by way of a study of the State of Qatar's National Food Security Programme. The chapter explores renewable energy generation in the State of Qatar, and discusses the role, challenges and opportunities of renewable energy in the emirate. It places the national food security project within the context of the energy, food and human rights chain and explores and proposes key components of a model legal framework to support it.
