Abstract/Description:

The preceding chapter devoted a substantial analysis to the United Nations (UN) Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy – clearly the most important document of the General Assembly regarding a comprehensive approach to respond to the challenges posed by terrorism, especially since it was adopted by consensus. This chapter focuses on the institutional implementation of the Strategy by the UN Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force (CTITF) and its UN Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT). As the CTITF currently comprises ten Working Groups1 and a multitude of projects, this chapter can only provide an overview of all these activities. It will, however, refer as much as possible to additional materials to allow access to in-depth information and analysis. The first part of the chapter will briefly examine the background of the creation of the CTITF and the UNCCT within the UN system and elaborate on their legal basis as well as their institutional set-up. The second part will focus on the thematic topics, which are addressed by projects of the CTITF and its UNCCT.
