Preface
It is my pleasure to present this first publication in the new col-
lection published by Edward Elgar Publishing relating to Judicial
Review and Cooperation. I would like to thank the editorial com-
mittee, including Mr Melchior, former president of the Denmark
Supreme Court, who was president of the Network of the Presidents
of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union before me,
Professor Micklitz and Professor Cafaggi, to whom the Network
owes a great number of studies initiated in relation to judicial coop-
eration at the European University Institute of Florence, with which
he has been so kind as to associate our Network. This publication
would not have been possible without the financial participation
of the European Union which, since the creation of the Network in
2004, provides financial support for our activities.
The Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of
the European Union is an association which currently involves all
28 Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the Member States,
as well as the Presidents of the Supreme Courts of Norway and
Montenegro as observers. Our self-imposed purpose is to create a
forum for discussion, to reinforce the relations between our Supreme
Courts, to compare our organizations and judgment methods, in
order to bring together common thoughts and values among the
various court systems of the Member States, as well as to instigate
a relationship of consultation with the institutions of the European
Union.
