This edited volume comes out of the recognition that thinking anew about the interplay
between trade and environmental protection has become essential due to the emerging
patterns in climate change and environmental deterioration.
Whereas trade and the environment has been a recurring theme in the multilateral
trading system, and a frequent topic that the WTO adjudicating bodies have had to deal
with, changes in climate and in climate-related law have been so significant lately that
new legal issues have arisen for--and the ensuing possibilities for interaction--with
international trade regulation.
The intensified discussion on climate change adaptation policies, in particular, is of
growing importance in the aftermath of the now well-established scientific consensus
regarding the harmful effect of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This
collection of papers gathers established scholars and young promising researchers in
the field--who were invited to share their ideas regarding some of the most pressing
issues regarding climate change and international trade law today. Being a research
handbook, contributors not only discuss the state-of-the-art, but also suggest directions
of future research in this area.
This volume would not have seen the light of the day without the dedication and
patience of its contributors who had to revise their papers several times to enhance the
overall coherence of this book. I am also grateful to Olga Kanevskaia from TILEC for
