Abstract/Description:

The emergence of global value chains (GVCs) has gathered pace over the last two decades. The interconnected nature of these GVCs, which span multiple countries, regions and market actors, has implications in many policy areas, including trade, investment and development. However, detailed data on how these GVCs really operate remains limited, particularly for the agri-food sector. The last few years have witnessed a growing number of case studies on the globally integrated value chains at the product and aggregate level but research into these agri-food GVCs, particularly at the macro level, is still in its early stages. The challenges are numerous: reliable data is often not available at national level, nor easily compared across states, and in the case of some of the most globally integrated value chains, is proprietary to multinational companies.
