Acknowledgements

Perhaps overly influenced by its frequently controversial subject matter,
this book has had a long and difficult gestation period. I am profoundly
grateful to all those involved for staying committed to this project.
First, our publisher Edward Elgar, for their supportiveness, profession-
alism and sheer decency. I cannot praise them enough and acknowledge
my indebtedness to them. I am particularly grateful to Luke Adams, Aisha
Bushby, Rosemary Campbell, Rebecca Stowell and our series editor,
Jeremy Philips.
Second, the contributors to this volume, for their exceptional patience
and willingness to update submissions as the months became years.
Third, my partner Nikita, for helping me finish what I had begun. I
could not have done this without her support.
As this book neared completion, we were deeply saddened to learn of
the death of our colleague Dwijen Rangnekar (17 April 196530 October
2015). Dwijen was a globally respected GI scholar as well as a good friend
to many of us. His work drew on approaches from sociology, anthropol-
ogy, evolutionary economics and critical legal studies to produce pioneer-
ing and inspiring research. Its influence extended well beyond academia
into the fields of international policy making as well as GI implementa-
tion in practice. Dwijen was also a generous colleague and wonderful
company foods, wines and spirits were not merely an academic interest.
He will be greatly missed.
