Global energy security challenges have significantly changed over the course of the last decades. However, market failures remain at the heart of the problems governments have to deal with. This chapter concentrates on energy security challenges for the European Union and on the strategies, as well as how policy makers in the EU have been dealing with oil and gas related supply problems. It ends with an outlook on how the new concept of the ‘Energy Union’ is trying to implement a more coordinated approach.
