Abstract/Description:

This chapter focuses on three of the most distinguished international judges, Hersch Lauterpact, René Cassin, and Antonio Cassese. It examines how, in the exercise of their functions as judges or due to the impact of their scholarly work on seminal international judicial decisions – in particular the Nuremberg judgment of the International Military Tribunal, the Tadi_ case before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and the Lawless v United Kingdom decision of the European Court of Human Rights – Judges Lauterpacht, Cassin and Cassese made important contributions to the development of international law towards a system progressively centred on the individual.
