Abstract/Description:
Sport governing bodies have claimed for a long time that fair play and the integrity of sport lie at the heart of their activity and relied on an automatism with regard to the fulfilment of this mission. However, in the last decade scandals in international sport – ranging from doping, match-fixing over corruption, rigged elections to human rights abuses –have demonstrated that sport, like business, needs specific instruments to ensure that misbehaviour is prevented and fundamental rights are respected. Given the values of the EU, such as respect for human dignity and human rights, freedom, democracy, equality and the rule of law, and the importance of sport in modern societies, this chapter examines the activities of the EU so far and the role the EU can and should play in contributing to Good Governance in sport, thus assisting the sports movement in restoring trust in sports organizations worldwide.
