Section Title: The lawfulness of music in contemporary Indonesian debate
Author(s): Khozanatu Lahpan, Neneng Yanti

Abstract/Description:
This chapter examines the lawfulness of music in contemporary Indonesian discourse. There has long been a debate among Muslims scholars on this issue, but the chapter goes further by looking at the Indonesian local context in West Java, where ethnicity and politics play their parts. It provides an insight that what we consider to be ‘Islamic’ music does not need to be in the Arabic language nor to employ Arabic songs and instruments.
