Abstract/Description:
Latin America is one of the places in the world where both labour and social security law is more developed, but at a lower level than Europe. While at the same time employment status is more precarious than in the northern hemisphere. There are many reasons for this state of affairs. The informal working relationships and independent or self-employment work have a significant presence in Latin America among the most vulnerable categories of people. This contribution will attempt to put into perspective the Latin American reality. It will do this by analysing how this region will continue to develop protective measures and also the possible relevance of these measures for other regions in the world. It will attempt to demonstrate that the principle that formalization is needed to protect is not a sine qua non condition to protect these workers. Another protection strategy is possible by analysing what has been done in Latin America.
