Abstract/Description:

Freedom of expression is a core civil and political right, which enables citizens to communicate and share different views and to sustain a public sphere constituted by open and vigorous debate. This chapter discusses the repressive turn in Chinese regulation of freedom of speech and expression. It focuses on increasing restrictions on communication facilitated by technological advances that dramatically increase the Party-state’s capacity to monitor speech and communication, to limit expression and access to information over the internet and other forms of social media as well as conventional media.
