Abstract/Description:

The vision of the Earth Charter is one of Earth Democracy defined as covenantal faithfulness to the evolutionary life of the planet and the historical struggle to live with one another in freedom, equality and solidarity. The movement will be renewed if it asserts its covenantal character and: (1) takes leadership for critical revision and further development of the principles of the Charter, at local and international levels; (2) makes empirical, rational and narrative arguments on behalf of the truth of the Charter’s vision and principles; (3) advances clear ethical and policy positions on the great geopolitical and environmental issues of our age; and (4) reconstitutes itself as a self-governing membership organization in which the citizens of the world pledge their accountability to one another in shared commitment to the ultimate cause of Earth’s survival and flourishing, prefiguring the emergence of a new covenanted global polis.
