Dower, Nigel --- "Global ethics and the Earth Charter" [2019] ELECD 2184; in Burdon, Peter; Bosselmann, Klaus; Engel, Kirsten (eds), "The Crisis in Global Ethics and the Future of Global Governance" (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2019) 156

Book Title: The Crisis in Global Ethics and the Future of Global Governance

Editor(s): Burdon, Peter; Bosselmann, Klaus; Engel, Kirsten

Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing

Section: Chapter 10

Section Title: Global ethics and the Earth Charter

Author(s): Dower, Nigel

Number of pages: 12

Abstract/Description:

This chapter begins by engaging Engel’s critical analysis of the Earth Charter and interrogating his idea of global ethics as covenantal and, linked to that, his view on what sort of thing the Earth Charter is. This is not so much because the author disagrees with his views on them - though that may be the case to some extent - but rather because the author believes the widely differing understandings of what global ethics is and what the Earth Charter is are to be accepted, as they may be part of the solution rather than part of the problem - certainly if we are trying to answer the question: what can be done to effect serious change?
