Abstract/Description:

This chapter argues that the summons to a new axial age of Earth Democracy and contact with Third Epoch Confucianism can remind us of the real meaning of democracy, and the distance between the genuinely democratic and the thin ‘liberal’ or procedural political form that is prevalent today - one that is often considered to be synonymous with capitalism. In response, we might re-examine the early Greek and Native American origins of democracy, the possibilities of the early Enlightenment period to which Tu refers, the democracy of the American founders and the vital democratic communities of our own time.
