Book Title: Research Handbook on Interdisciplinary Approaches to Law and Religion
Editor(s): Sandberg, Russell; Doe, Norman; Kane, Bronach; Roberts, Caroline
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
Section: Chapter 19
Section Title: Monotheism and the death penalty: towards a homogenous exegesis for abolition
Author(s): Yorke, Jon; Nazir , Amna
Number of pages: 37
Abstract/Description:
This chapter provides an example of comparative religious law. It examines the evolution of the death penalty in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It is argued that a comparative approach shows a similar trend - the history of the death penalty is the manifestation of privileging of retribution in punishment and there has not been enough understanding of the importance of God’s mercy and grace - and this can be used to inform a criminal justice system.
