Abstract/Description:
This chapter provides commentary on art. 31 of the CRC on the right to rest, leisure and play. The chapter defines these three concepts and explores the obligations under art. 31 in relation to these concepts. The chapter also appraises key issues such as the rights of particular groups of children: girl children; children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds or from minorities; children with disabilities; and indigenous children in the context of art. 31. Finally, the chapter flags contemporary issues such as rapid urbanisation, the commodification of play, increasing use of information and communications technologies by children that may impact the enjoyment of the right to rest, leisure and play adversely.
