Abstract/Description:
The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations showed that the European Parliament has been a driving force to promote greater ‘economic democracy’ and a more balanced approach of globalization. By standing up for sound governance and the principles of openness and transparency, the European Parliament has not only spoken out on behalf of the citizens of the Union, but also attempted to reinforce its own prerogatives, thus enhancing its legitimacy and its influence. However, the greatest challenge for the Members of the European Parliament remains to focus on reaching a fair balance between free trade and the protection of the common good, in areas such as social justice, environment and public health.
