Book Title: Copyright in the Information Society
Editor(s): Lindner, Brigitte; Shapiro, Ted
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
Section Title: FOREWORD
Number of pages: 12
Abstract/Description:
The Directive 2001/29/EC on Copyright in the Information Society implemented the two WIPO ‘Internet Treaties’ WCT and WPPT into EU law, prepared the accession of the EU to these treaties and set the tone for the harmonization of the essential rights and exceptions in EU copyright law. This Information Society Directive is a cornerstone of copyright protection in the European Union. The Foreword presents the insights of the one, who was responsible for the preparation and negotiation of this Directive, into how the Directive came about, and makes the reader familiar with its substance. It explains why its implementation into the national laws of EU member states is so important and why this Directive continues to matter for EU copyright, even or all the more so in times of radical changes in technology, consumer behavior and business models, and in view of the ‘Brexit’.
