About the authors


Marcus O. Müller is the Chairman of Board 3.3.02 at the European
Patent Office. After his PhD in polymer chemistry (1996), Marcus
worked in industrial research in the field of membrane technology for
one and a half years. In 1997, Marcus joined the patent department
of Akzo Nobel in the Netherlands and qualified as a European Patent
Attorney in 2001. He then moved to the European Patent Office, where
he has been working as a patent examiner in search and substan-
tive examination for almost ten years. In this position, Marcus was
also active as first member and chairman in opposition proceedings,
instructor in the opposition course for examiners and tutor for patent
attorney candidates in the internship programme `Praktika Intern'. He
was furthermore a member of the Examination Committee for Paper
C (opposition) of the European Qualifying Exam and a member of the
peer review advisory board of the US Patent and Trademark Office. In
2010, he was appointed as a member of the Boards of Appeal and in
2018 as chairman. Since 2013, Marcus has been a co-lecturer in a series
of `Opposition and Appeal' seminars at various locations in Europe.
These seminars are organised by the European Patent Institute (EPI)
and supported by the European Patent Office. In addition, he has been
a co-lecturer at the case law conferences organised by the Boards of
