About the Authors

Rochelle Cooper Dreyfuss is the Pauline Newman Professor of Law, New York University School of Law. She was a member of the US Health and Human Services Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health, and Society and served on its task force on Patient Access to Genetic Tests.

Chris Dent is a Senior Research Fellow at the Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia at the University of Melbourne. His research has focused on alternative perspectives on the control of knowledge as represented by the intellectual property system and he has published work that has applied regulatory theory to the law of copyright, patents and defamation.

Timothy Caulfield is a Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy, a Professor in the Faculty of Law and the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, and the Research Director of the Health Law and Science Policy Group (HeaLS). He is also a Health Senior Scholar with the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research and the Principal Investigator for a number of large interdisciplinary projects. Caulfield is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

Dianne Nicol is a Professor at the Law Faculty at the University of Tasmania. Dianne started her academic career as a scientist, receiving a PhD from Dalhousie University in Canada in 1987. She started studying law after moving to Tasmania in 1992. The broad theme of Dianne’s research in the law discipline is the regulation of biotechnology and human genetics. She is particularly interested in the commercialisation of genetic knowledge and patenting of genetic inventions. She is currently the lead chief investigator on two Australian Research Council funded projects, one on patenting of biotechnology inventions, the other on the role of law in the era of personalised medicine. The patenting project is aimed at understanding the changing roles patenting, licensing and collaboration in innovation in complex areas of technology like biotechnology.

Johnathon Liddicoat BSc (Hons) LLB (Hons) (Melb), LLM Candidate and Research Fellow at the University of Tasmania. His research foci are in doctrinal patent law and the practical use of the patent system, particularly in biotech innovation.

Ben Mee is a lawyer practising in litigation, competition and intellectual property law at Allens Linklaters, Sydney. He graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science-Bachelor of Laws (Hons), and served in 2010 and 2011 as an associate to the Hon Chief Justice Robert French AC. His practice has a particular focus on the pharmaceutical, media, telecommunications and technology sectors.

E Richard Gold is a James McGill Professor at the Faculty of Law at McGill University who studies innovation systems, comparative patent law and empirical methods to track these in the life sciences. He has provided advice to various Canadian governments and international organizations (eg OECD, WIPO, WHO, UNITAID) on patent law and policy, innovation and collaborative structures.

Andrew Baker is a BCL/LLB student at the Faculty of Law at McGill University where he currently conducts research on patent landscape methodologies. He previously worked as a researcher at the University of Saskatchewan Department of Bioresource Policy, Business & Economics in the fields of intellectual property, extra-contractual liability, and regulatory policy in agricultural biotechnology.

Tania Bubela has a PhD (Biology, University of Sydney, Australia) and JD (University of Alberta, Canada) and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University of Alberta, Canada.

Dr Paul Schofield has a DPhil in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford, is Reader in Biomedical Informatics in the Department of Physiology Development and Neuroscience, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.

Dr Cami Ryan is with the Department of Bioresource Policy, Business and Economics College of Agriculture and Bioresources, University of Saskatchewan, Canada.

Rhiannon Adams is an intellectual property lawyer with Parlee McLaws LLP, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

David Einhorn is house counsel for The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine, USA.

Dr Matthew Rimmer (BA/LLB ANU, Phd UNSW) is an Australian Research Council Future Fellow; an Associate Professor at the ANU College of Law; and an Associate Director of ACIPA.
