Review of Phillip Lipton and Abe Herzbert, _UNDERSTANDING COMPANY LAW:
COMPUTER TUTORIALS_ (5th edition), Sydney: Law Book Company Ltd, 1993;
Software by Microcraft Pty Ltd 1993.
Pei Teing Kee
These computer tutorials were designed to enhance learning by
enabling students of Company Law to revise facts and concepts,
practise skills, problem solve and apply and test their
knowledge. Full directions for loading the program are found at
the back of the text Understanding Company Law. The tutorials are
structured in a similar fashion to the text with 5 main
divisions: Introduction to Computer Based Tutorials; Introduction
to Corporations (Chapters 1-6); Corporate Financing (Chapters 7-
11); Corporate Management (Chapters 12-16); Corporate
Restructuring (Chapters 17-20). Each of these main divisions
constitute a selection of tutorials which test the contents of
one to two chapters in the text.
There is a good variety of questions which are useful for
revising and testing knowledge including multiple choice,
matching, true/false and short answer. Each tutorial consists of
15 questions and some involve a fact scenario followed by a few
questions which enable testing of problem solving skills. The
tutorials employ good graphics and relate closely to the text.
This enhances its usefulness to students studying from
Understanding Company Law as a prescribed text.
The tutorials are also informative. As each question is
attempted, the computer indicates whether the answer given by the
user is correct or incorrect and includes a brief explanation,
sometimes citing cases and relevant sections in the Corporations
Law. The score for each tutorial being attempted is conveniently
displayed on the screen and updated as the user proceeds from one
question to the next. There is a great deal of flexibility in
that the user may exit a tutorial at any time and need not
complete tutorials in any particular order. The user may view
results of all tutorials attempted at one sitting and the time
taken for each tutorial. The computer based tutorials can be used
to enhance learning at the user's own pace and serve as a helpful
companion to the Understanding Company Law text.
