FOREWORD

BY

PROFESSOR PETER DAWKINS

VICE-CHANCELLOR AND PRESIDENT, VICTORIA UNIVERSITY

I am delighted to present the 6th edition of the Victoria University Law and Justice Journal (VULJ).

This publication is yet another shining example of Victoria University (VU) leading the way, and it is an achievement made possible through the commitment of a dedicated and experienced group of staff and students.

As the Vice-Chancellor of VU, I am extremely proud of the work being carried out by our College of Law and Justice. I am particularly impressed with the ongoing success of this prestigious publication and the international acclaim it continues to garner.

I am also impressed with the deep connections our College of Law and Justice continues to develop with Victoria and Australia’s legal communities. These connections are reinforced by the many wonderful authors who have contributed to this issue and the growing list of legal practitioners who subscribe.

The content in this issue reflects the breadth of our programs in law and justice, and highlights how VU continues to be focused on the needs of our changing society and the people for whom law and justice must work.

During our Centenary year, there was much discussion around VU’s positioning as the University of Opportunity and Success. This reflects the sentiments expressed by the founding Principal of Footscray Technical School who urged students to walk through the ‘door of opportunity’ offered by further education in order to improve their lives. There is no doubt that the College of Law and Justice is today also providing ‘a door of opportunity’ to the many students who benefit from a VU legal education, and who go on to make an outstanding contribution to our wider society.

Our students and academics also benefit from working in the heart of Melbourne’s legal precinct; a location which affords them unparalleled opportunities and access to the legal sector. In addition to this unique CBD location, we are aware of the important contribution made from our ‘home’ in the West by past and present staff and students who have made our university what it is today.

Whether you’re reading this on the primary website (vulj.vu.edu.au) or via one of the many distribution channels, including Hein-Online, Austlii and AGIS+Text, I thank you for your continued involvement and engagement with Victoria University.
