The Parliament of Australia enacts:

1  Short title 

5 

 

  This Act is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Amendment 

6 

(Restoring Shortwave Radio) Act 2017.

2  Commencement 

8 

 

(1)  Each provision of this Act specified in column 1 of the table 

9 

commences, or is taken to have commenced, in accordance with 

10 

column 2 of the table. Any other statement in column 2 has effect 

11 

according to its terms.

1  After section 27

Insert:

27A  Shortwave radio services 

6 

 

(1)  The Corporation must maintain 3 domestic shortwave radio 

7 

transmission services for the Northern Territory which: 

8 

 

(a)  cover the same areas of the Northern Territory as the 

9 

Corporation's shortwave radio transmission services covered 

10 

on 30 January 2017; and 

11 

 

(b)  broadcast the proximate local radio service. 

12 

 

(2)  The Corporation must maintain an international shortwave radio 

13 

transmission service for Papua New Guinea and parts of the Pacific 

14 

which: 

15 

 

(a)  uses at least 3 transmitters; and 

16 

 

(b)  broadcasts the Corporation's international service; and 

17 

 

(c)  broadcasts programs in languages appropriate for the 

18 

countries to which they are broadcast.
