The Parliament of Australia enacts:

1 Short title

This Act is the
Ensuring Northern Territory Rights Act 2021
.

2 Commencement
7
(1) Each provision of this Act specified in column 1 of the table
8
commences, or is taken to have commenced, in accordance with
9
column 2 of the table. Any other statement in column 2 has effect
10
according to its terms.

The object of this Act is to deliver people living in the Northern

Territory the same rights as people who reside in Australian states.

repealed as set out in the applicable items in the Schedule

concerned, and any other item in a Schedule to this Act has effect
13
according to its terms.

--repeals relating to euthanasia laws

(1)
Despite the repeal of the
Euthanasia Laws Act 1997
and section 50A of
3
the
Northern Territory (Self-Government) Act 1978
by this Schedule,
4
the
Rights of the Terminally Ill Act
1995
(NT):
5
(a) continues to have effect as a law of the Territory in relation
6
to any act or thing that was done before 27 March 1997; but
7
(b) has no force or effect as a law of the Territory in relation to
8
any act or thing done on or after that day.

Note:
27 March 1997 is the day the
Euthanasia Laws Act 1997
received the Royal Assent.

(2)
Subitem (1) applies subject to a contrary intention in a law of the
11
Northern Territory that is enacted after the commencement of this item.
