The Parliament of Australia enacts:

1 Short title

This Act may be cited as the Health Insurance Amendment

(Medicare Funding for Certain Types of Abortion) Act 2013.

2 Commencement

This Act commences on the day after this Act receives the Royal
8
Assent.

repealed as set out in the applicable items in the Schedule

1 After section 17

Insert:

17A Medicare benefits not payable in respect of certain types of
5
medically induced terminations
6
(1) Notwithstanding any other provision of this Act, or of any
7
regulation made pursuant to this Act, a medicare benefit is not
8
payable in respect of a professional service if:
9
(a) the professional service involves a medical practitioner
10
performing:
11
(i) a medically induced termination on a pregnant woman;
12
or
13
(ii) a service that relates to or is connected with performing
14
a medically induced termination on a pregnant woman;
15
and
16
(b) the termination is carried out solely because of the gender of
17
the foetus.
