The Parliament of Australia enacts:

1 Short title

This Act may be cited as the Rights of the Terminally Ill
5
(Euthanasia Laws Repeal) Act 2008.

2 Commence ment

This Act commences on the day on which it receives the Royal
8
Assent.

3 Object of Act

The object of this Act is, in recognising the rights of the people of
11
the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory and
12
Norfolk Island to make laws for the peace, order and good
13
government of their territories, including the right to legislate for
14
the terminally ill, to repeal the Euthanasia Laws Act 1997 which
15
removed that right.

Each Act that is specified in a Schedule to this Act is amended or

repealed as set out in the applicable items in the Schedule

1 The whole of the Act

Repeal the Act.

2 Application

To avoid doubt, the enactment of the Legislative Assembly of the
7
Northern Territory called the Rights of the Terminally Ill Act 1995 has
8
the same effect after the commencement of this Act as it had before the
9
commencement of the Euthanasia Laws Act 1997.
