Australian Citizenship Regulations (Amendment)

Section 53 of the Australian citizenship Act 1948 (the Act) provides in part that the Governor-General may make regulations concerning the imposition and recovery of fees in respect of the grant of any certificate authorized to be granted under the Act. Section 13 of the Act empowers the Minister, under specified circumstances, to grant certificates of Australian citizenship. Regulation 9 of the Australian Citizenship Regulations (the Principal Regulations) provides that a fee of $35 is payable on the lodgment of an application under section 13 of the Act for the grant of a certificate of Australian citizenship.

The purpose of the Regulations is to amend Regulation 9 of the Principal Regulations so as to reduce the application fee from $35 to $20 for age pensioners. Applicants are required to provide evidence of their eligibility for the concession by producing either their pensioner health benefits card or social security card.
