World Heritage Properties Conservation Regulations (Amendment)

The purpose of the World Heritage Properties Conservation Regulations (Amendment) is to protect the Exit Cave karst system in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Property from damage or destruction through quarrying operations. Part of the Exit Cave system connects to the limestone quarry included in Mining Lease 69M/81 in the vicinity of Lune River, in the Land District of Kent, State of Tasmania.

Details of the proposed regulations are as follows:

Regulation 1 provides for amendment of the World Heritage Properties Conservation Regulations.

Regulation 2 inserts the new regulation 3A into the Principal Regulations, New regulation 3A (1) provides definitions of the land affected by the regulations. New regulation 3A (2) prohibits the carrying out of any excavation works, operations for, or exploratory drilling, in connection with the recovery of minerals or stone, and the use of explosives on the property. The carrying out of work preparatory to or associated with the above acts will also be prohibited.
