ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER COMMUNITIES (JUSTICE, LAND AND OTHER MATTERS) ACT 1984 - SECT 16
Authorised officers
16 Authorised officers
(1) A community government or indigenous regional council may appoint any
person to be an authorised officer for its local government area for such
period as the community government or indigenous regional council specifies,
to protect the natural and cultural resources of the area.
(2) Subject to
subsection (3) , an authorised officer appointed under subsection (1) is to
perform such functions and duties and may exercise such powers as are
prescribed in the local laws for the local government area in which the
authorised officer is appointed, which local laws may have regard to
Aboriginal tradition or Island custom.
(3) An authorised officer may only
perform a function or exercise a power, in respect of Aboriginal or
Torres Strait Islander land in the local government area for which the
authorised officer is appointed, under an agreement between the
community government or indigenous regional council and the grantees of the
land.
