(1) This section applies to a relevant person who is not—(a) an Australian citizen; or(b) a foreign national with a right of residence in Australia.
(2) Before a police officer starts to question the person, the police officer must inform the person that the person may telephone, or attempt to telephone, the embassy or consular office of the country of which the person is a citizen.
(3) If the person wishes to telephone the appropriate embassy or consular office, the police officer must—(a) as soon as practicable, make available to the person reasonable facilities for the purpose; and(b) delay the questioning for a reasonable time to allow the person to telephone, or attempt to telephone, the appropriate embassy or consular office.
