Other absences—principal may ask for clarification of reason for absence
23 Other absences—principal may ask for clarification of reason for absence
(1) This section applies if— (a) a student of a State school is absent from
school; and
(b) the absence is not an unexplained absence; and
(c) the
principal of the school is not satisfied about the reason for the absence.
(2) If the student is a child, the principal may ask a parent of the student
the reason for the absence.
(3) Subsection (2) does not apply to the student
if the principal is satisfied it would be inappropriate in the circumstances
to ask a parent of the student the reason for the absence. Example— It may
be inappropriate to ask a parent of the student the reason for the student’s
absence if the student is living independently of his or her parents.
(4)
The principal may ask the student the reason for the absence if— (a) the
student is a child and subsection (2) does not apply to the student; or
(b)
the student is an adult.
