FACT SHEET Constitution Amendment (Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal People) Bill 2016 This Bill amends the Preamble of the Constitution Act 1934 by inserting a new paragraph of text. The new text is a factual statement of acknowledgement and recognition of Aboriginal people as Tasmania’s First People. The draft amendment is consistent with the recommendations of the House of Assembly Standing Committee on Community Development Inquiry into the Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal People as Tasmania’s First People. Tasmania is the only state in Australia that has not already provided for constitutional recognition of Aboriginal people.
