FACT SHEET House of Assembly Restoration Bill 2018 In 1998 the Parliamentary Reform Bill 1998 was introduced into the Tasmanian parliament and passed. The Act reduced the number of seats in the House of Assembly from 35 to 25, and the number of seats per electorate from seven to five. The move has resulted criticism from a range of sectors. It has been argued less seats in parliament results in a smaller pool of talent to draw on for Ministries and Ministers with high portfolio loads. The House of Assembly Restoration Bill 2018 amends the Constitution Act 1934 and the Electoral Act 2004 to restore the number of seats in the House of Assembly to 35 and restoring the number of seats per electorate to seven. The bill also provides for an additional Minister, the requirement for four additional members to be present for a Quorum, and increases the number of candidates that must be marked on a House of Assembly election ballot to seven.
