FACT SHEET TASMANIAN DEVELOPMENT AMENDMENT BILL 2008 · On 12 February 2008, the government's economic development and tourism portfolios were combined under the administrative control of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism. · Tasmania Development and Resources (TDR) is an authority with an independent Board established under the provisions of the Tasmanian Development Act 1983 in order to encourage and promote the balanced economic development of Tasmania. · Tourism Tasmania is an authority with an independent Board established under the provisions of the Tourism Tasmania Act 1996 in order to maximise the economic and social benefits for Tasmania by fostering a sustainable tourism industry in the State. · There is currently no common directorship between the two respective Boards. · Given tourism and branding are key economic drivers for the State, it is desirable that Tourism Tasmania has representation on the Tasmanian Development and Resources Board (TDR Board). · The proposed amendments to the Tasmanian Development Act 1983 will allow the Chair of the Tourism Tasmania Board to be nominated and appointed as a director of the TDR Board. · The TDR Board currently has a full complement of eight directors, which, have been appointed by the Governor on the nomination of the Minister for three year terms. The Chief Executive has been appointed for a five year term. · The next director vacancy is not scheduled to arise until December 2008. · The TDR Board currently comprises directors with a range of backgrounds, experience and skills necessary to enable TDR to achieve its objectives and is operating in a highly effective manner. · The appointment of the Chair of the Tourism Tasmania Board will provide an additional and complementary skill set to the TDR Board.
