TOURISM TASMANIA AMENDMENT BILL 15 OF 2008

                               FACT SHEET

            TOURISM TASMANIA AMENDMENT BILL 2008

· On 12 February 2008, the government's economic development and tourism
portfolios were combined under the administrative control of the Department of
    Economic Development and Tourism.

· Tourism Tasmania is an authority with an independent Board established under
the provisions of the Tourism Tasmania Act 1996 in order to maximise the
economic and social benefits for Tasmania by fostering a sustainable tourism
    industry in the State.

· Tasmania Development and Resources (TDR) is an authority with an
independent Board established under the provisions of the Tasmanian
Development Act 1983 in order to encourage and promote the balanced
    economic development of Tasmania.

· There is currently no common directorship between the two respective Boards.

· Given tourism and branding are key economic drivers for the State, it is
desirable that Economic Development has representation on the Tourism
    Tasmania Board.

· The proposed amendments to the Tourism Tasmania Act 1996 will allow the
Secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism to be
nominated and appointed as a director of the Tourism Tasmania Board.

· The Tourism Tasmania Board currently has a full complement of seven
directors, which, have been appointed by the Governor on the nomination of the
Minister for a mix of staggered terms of three and two years.

· Varying lengths of appointment ensures new directors are not all appointed at
the same time, to avoid an all new Board from a determined date.

· The Tourism Tasmania Board currently comprises directors with a range of
backgrounds, experience and skills necessary to enable Tourism Tasmania to
achieve its objectives and is operating in a highly effective manner.

· The appointment of the Secretary of the Department of Economic Development
and Tourism will provide an additional and complementary skill set to the
    Tourism Tasmania Board.
