(1) No person shall be liable in tort for any conduct on account of its being maintenance or champerty as known to the common law except in the case of a cause of action accruing before the commencement of the Abolition of Obsolete Offences Act 1969 .
(2) The abolition of criminal and civil liability
for maintenance and champerty shall not affect any rule of law as to the cases
in which a contract is to be treated as contrary to public policy or as being
otherwise illegal and any contract which would have been illegal and void
before the commencement of the Abolition of Obsolete Offences Act 1969 on the
ground that its making or performance involved or was in aid of maintenance or
champerty shall continue to be illegal and void after the said commencement.
