Adjudication No. 6 (January 1977)

Mr. Alan Matheson, Associate Director of the Ecumenical Migration Centre of the Victorian Council of Churches, complained to the Australian Press Council about a front-page report in the Chadstone Progress of October 13, 1976, headed "Greek threat of violence".

His complaint was supported by Mr. N. Polites, director of Social Work of the Australian-Greek Welfare Society.

The Chadstone Progress report dealt with a dispute within the Greek Community of Clayton, Victoria, over the building of a Greek Orthodox Church.

The complainant claimed that the headline was offensive and that the report would harm the development of harmonious relations in the community in Australia.

After heating evidence, the Council's Complaints Committee, which met in Melbourne, was not satisfied that the complaint was justified and dismissed it.
