Australian Press Council |
The Australian Press Council has received a complaint against The Australian newspaper charging that in three instances, all relating to the federal election campaign in October 1980, the headlines and opening paragraphs gave a false interpretation of the content of the stories that followed.
The council disapproves of the fact that the headlines and the leading paragraphs of the article in The Financial Australian of 10 October 1980 gave a misleading emphasis in relation to the substance of the article. The headline read "Brokers see ALP victory as a disaster for market" whereas the quotations from only 24 brokers were in some cases more qualified in the body of the article than the heading would suggest.
