Adjudication No. 399 (April 1989) [1989] APC 12

ADJUDICATION No. 399 (April 1989)

The Equestrian Federation of Australia makes two complaints to the Australian Press Council concerning an article headed "Capt Mark silent on marriage rift" which appeared in the Sunday Mail on 20 November 1988.

The first complaint is that the Sunday Mail broke an embargo on a press release concerning the presence in Queensland of Captain Mark Phillips. The newspaper says it got its information from other sources and never saw the federation's press release. As the Press Council has said before, publishing stories based on sources other than an embargoed document does not involve a breach of an embargo. This complaint is dismissed.

The second complaint deals with several inaccuracies in the article concerning the length of Captain Phillips' visit, the places he visited and the name of the riding club where Captain Phillips was to hold a riding school. The paper admits there were inaccuracies. This complaint is upheld.
