Australian Press Council |
The Australian Press Council has dismissed a complaint about a Brisbane Sunday Mail editorial on 8 August 1993, which called for continued Queensland government financial support for the Gold Coast Indy Grand Prix.
The complainant, Mr Greg Copley of North Maclean, Queensland, said the newspaper had a conflict of interest in the issue because the chairman of the Gold Coast IndyCar Company used to be an executive of, and remains a consultant to, the Sunday Mail's publishers, Queensland Newspapers.
The Press Council does not believe that the notion of conflict of interest extends to these circumstances. It also notes that the editorial included criticism of the IndyCar Company management.
