Australian Press Council |
The Council dismisses the complaint against The Courier-Mail for the use of the word `infamous' to describe politician Pauline Hanson in the first edition of the paper on 12 January 1999.
The newspaper replaced the word with `controversial' in subsequent editions because it considered the original word `was not appropriate'.
The article concerned the arrest and subsequent custody of Mrs Hanson's estranged son Steven for outstanding warrants and fines on the previous Sunday night.
The Council believes that the word `infamous' now has various shades of meaning and, as a result, its use in the article does not warrant an adverse finding.
